Brazilian judge ends investigation into Google and Telegram coordination

On Thursday, a judge from Brazil’s top court decided to close the investigation into Alphabet’s Google and Telegram for allegedly coordinating their opposition to a bill designed to combat fake news.

This pending bill would mandate that internet companies’ search engines and social messaging services identify and report illegal content, with significant fines imposed for non-compliance. In his decision, Judge Alexandre de Moraes concurred with Brazil’s deputy prosecutor general, who stated there was no basis for initiating criminal proceedings against the two tech companies.
