EU antitrust regulators accused Apple (AAPL.O) on Monday of violating tech rules under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), marking the first charge of its kind. Apple also faces scrutiny over new fees imposed on app developers.
The European Commission, responsible for antitrust and tech regulation in the EU, sent preliminary findings to Apple following a March investigation. DMA violations could lead to fines up to 10% of global annual turnover.
EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager criticized Apple’s new terms, saying they restrict app developers’ ability to communicate with users and make contracts. Apple can avoid fines by adjusting its practices.
Apple defended its position, stating it has adjusted policies based on feedback and remains committed to compliance.
