Samsung Electronics Secures Advanced AI Chip Contract with Japan’s Preferred Networks

Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) announced on Tuesday that it has secured an order from Japanese AI company Preferred Networks. The order is for the production of AI application chips using Samsung’s advanced 2-nanometre foundry process and state-of-the-art chip packaging service.

This marks the first publicized order for Samsung’s 2-nanometre chip manufacturing process. The company did not disclose the order’s size. The chips will be manufactured using gate-all-around (GAA) architecture, and multiple chips will be integrated into a single package to boost inter-connection speed and reduce size, according to Samsung’s statement.

Gaonchips Co. (399720.KQ), a South Korean company, designed the chips. Junichiro Makino, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Computing Architecture at Preferred Networks, stated that these chips will be used for the company’s high-performance computing hardware, supporting generative AI technologies such as large language models.
