Global PC shipments increase in the second quarter; Apple records its largest growth, according to IDC.

Global PC shipments increased by 3% in the second quarter, driven by demand for AI-capable devices, with Apple (AAPL.O) experiencing the largest growth among PC manufacturers, according to preliminary data from research firm IDC released on Tuesday.

PC shipments reached 64.9 million units in the three months ended June, marking a second consecutive quarter of growth following two years of decline, the report noted.

IDC reported that Apple’s shipments surged by 20.8% compared to the second quarter of 2023, the highest increase among global PC makers, followed by a gain of 13.7% by Acer Group.

The PC market is anticipated to rebound from a slowdown in orders post the pandemic-driven surge in purchases. According to Ryan Reith, group vice president at IDC’s Worldwide Device Trackers, “The excitement is clearly focused on AI, but there are significant developments in non-AI PC purchases driving optimism in this mature market.”

However, IDC highlighted that sluggish performance in China continued to weigh on the market, noting that excluding China, global shipments grew by over 5% year-over-year in the quarter.

Lenovo Group (0992.HK) led the market with a 22.7% share, followed by HP (HPQ.N) at 21.1%. Dell Technologies’ (DELL.N) market share stood at 15.5%, with shipments declining by 2.4%.
