Brazil’s Supreme Court said on Friday that lawyers for social media platform X paid fines to the wrong bank, delaying the decision on whether to allow the company to resume operations in Brazil. The fines, which X’s lawyers argued were paid correctly, are the last requirement before the court can authorize the company to operate again.
X has been suspended in Brazil since late August for not complying with court orders on moderating hate speech and failing to appoint a legal representative in the country. On Friday, X, owned by Elon Musk, filed a new request to restore its services, stating it had paid all fines.
After Moraes’ decision, X’s lawyers again asked to resume operations, denying that the fines were paid to the wrong account and arguing that consulting the prosecutor general was unnecessary.
