Microsoft Commits $2.2 Billion to Advance Cloud and AI Services in Malaysia

On Thursday, Microsoft (MSFT.O) announced its intention to invest $2.2 billion over the next four years in Malaysia, aiming to bolster cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) services. This move underscores the company’s strategic focus on advancing its generative AI technology in the Asian market.

This investment, marking Microsoft’s largest in Malaysia over its 32-year presence in the country, will encompass the establishment of cloud and AI infrastructure. Additionally, the initiative will facilitate AI upskilling opportunities for 200,000 individuals and provide support for the nation’s developer community, as stated by the company.

During a visit to Kuala Lumpur, Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella emphasized the importance of establishing world-class infrastructure within Malaysia to benefit all organizations and startups.

In collaboration with the Malaysian government, Microsoft plans to establish a national AI Centre of Excellence and strengthen the country’s cybersecurity capabilities, as outlined in the company’s statement.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, following his meeting with Nadella, affirmed that this investment aligns with Malaysia’s objectives of enhancing its AI capabilities.

Microsoft’s commitment to expanding AI development extends globally. Nadella recently announced a $1.7 billion investment in Indonesia and disclosed plans to inaugurate the company’s inaugural regional data center in Thailand.
