The Biden administration is preparing to expand its strategy to protect U.S. AI technology from China, considering initial steps to regulate the most advanced AI Models, the fundamental software behind artificial intelligence platforms like ChatGPT, according to sources.
The Commerce Department is exploring potential regulations to limit the export of proprietary or closed-source AI models, which keep their software and training data confidential, as reported by three individuals familiar with the situation.
Any regulatory action would supplement existing measures implemented over the past couple of years aimed at preventing the export of sophisticated AI chips to China, aimed at impeding Beijing’s progress in developing cutting-edge technology, particularly for military applications. However, keeping pace with the rapidly evolving AI industry presents significant challenges for regulators.
The Commerce Department declined to provide a comment on the matter. The Chinese Embassy in Washington has not yet responded to requests for comment.
