Huawei claims significant advancements in operating systems and AI

On Friday, China’s Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL) announced significant advancements in areas ranging from operating systems to artificial intelligence, claiming it had accomplished in 10 years what took the United States and Europe 30 years.

Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, made these remarks during the opening of a three-day developer conference in Dongguan. He highlighted that the company’s Harmony operating system is now installed on over 900 million devices.

“Harmony has achieved major breakthroughs. In just 10 years, we’ve accomplished what our European and American counterparts needed more than 30 years to do, specifically in developing the core technology of an independent operating system,” Yu stated.

HarmonyOS, Huawei’s proprietary operating system, was launched in 2019 following U.S. technology restrictions that cut off Google support for the Android operating system used in Huawei smartphones.

Yu also mentioned that Huawei’s Ascend artificial intelligence infrastructure, the most powerful AI technology from a Chinese company, is now the second most popular globally, following Nvidia (NVDA.O), which leads the AI chip market.

Yu noted that operating systems and other software have long been dominated by Europe and the United States. However, the advent of the Internet of Things has provided Huawei an opportunity to surpass them.
