Nvidia developing a new flagship AI chip version for the Chinese market

Nvidia (NVDA.O) is developing a version of its new flagship AI chips for the Chinese market that complies with current U.S. export controls, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

In March, the AI chip giant unveiled its “Blackwell” chip series, which is set for mass production later this year. Within that series, the B200 is 30 times faster than its predecessor in tasks like providing chatbot responses.

Nvidia will collaborate with Inspur, one of its major distribution partners in China, for the launch and distribution of the chip, tentatively named the “B20,” according to two of the sources.

The sources requested anonymity as Nvidia has not yet made a public announcement. A spokesperson for Nvidia declined to comment, and Inspur did not respond to requests for comment.

In 2023, Washington tightened its controls on exports of advanced semiconductors to China to prevent advancements in supercomputing that could support China’s military. Since then, Nvidia has developed three chips specifically tailored for the Chinese market.
